A Certified Prosthetist
A certified prosthetist is a practitioner who provides care to patients with partial or total absence of a limb by designing, fabricating and fitting devices known as prostheses (artificial limbs). The prosthetist assists your physician in examining and evaluating your prosthetic needs, and prescribing prostheses based on disability and condition. The prosthetist is responsible for design, necessary casts and model modifications, fitting, evaluation of the prosthesis on the patient and instructing the patient in its initial use.

A Certified Orthotist
A certified orthotist is a practitioner who provides care to patients with disabling conditions of the limbs and spine by designing, fabricating and fitting devices known as orthoses (braces). The orthotist assists your physician in examining and evaluating your orthotic needs, and prescribing orthoses based on disability and condition. The orthotist's responsibilities include formulation of orthotic design, making casts, measurements and model modification, fitting, evaluating the orthosis on the patient and instructing the patient in its initial use.

A Certified Prosthetist Orthotist
A certified prosthetist orthotist is a practitioner whose function and responsibilities conform to both the prosthetist and the orthotist, as defined above. The title of Certified Prosthetist (C. P.), Orthotist (C. O.) or Prosthetist Orthotist (C. P. O.) is conferred by the American Board for Certification upon practitioners who successfully complete the course of study and examinations in those disciplines. They devote time to state, regional and national meetings and educational seminars, in order to keep abreast of the latest information and developing technologies in their field.
